Estuarine Tranquility

Changes in the estuarine geography, including shoal formation and dissolution, as well as the flora and fauna in this area are attributed often to intensified farming practices after WWII, when fertilizers and pesticides came in to regular use. More land was put into regular agricultural tillage with the attendant problems of soil run-off building up sediments in the creeks. 

The shoals change frequently and sometimes entry to the creek is difficult by motor craft.  But we are mostly kayakers and we follow the snaking of a new channel with glee, particularly in spring time when routes are prone to significant remodeling.   

For the past several years a pair of Mute Swans nest along the creek side of the Blake Creek shoal and, when the channel is just right, a quick glance shoreline while running the channel during flood tide can reward the observant kayaker with a surprisingly close visit to the nest of a pair of returning Mutes.
